Minnesota lawmaker and husband killed in apparent politically motivated attack
MINNEAPOLIS — A senior Democratic lawmaker in Minnesota and her husband were killed in what officials are calling a "politically motivated assassination" on Saturday.
State Representative Melissa Hortman, a former Speaker of the Minnesota House, and her husband Mark were fatally shot at their residence by a gunman posing as a police officer, authorities confirmed.
The assailant, who remains at large, also critically wounded State Senator John Hoffman and his wife during the rampage, which Governor Tim Walz described as a “targeted act of political violence.”
Governor Walz, speaking at a press briefing, confirmed that Hoffman and his spouse are undergoing surgery and said he is “cautiously optimistic” about their recovery. “This was an assassination attempt,” Walz said. “We do not settle our political disagreements at gunpoint. Peaceful discourse is the foundation of our democracy.”
Law enforcement officials said the suspect fled on foot after exchanging gunfire with police at the Hortmans’ home. A vehicle believed to belong to the gunman was recovered nearby, inside which officers discovered a manifesto containing a list of other public officials—suggesting the potential for further attacks.
The FBI, U.S. Marshals, and Minnesota state police are now involved in a manhunt for the suspect, whose identity has not yet been publicly disclosed.
National Reaction
Former President Donald Trump issued a statement following the shooting, calling the violence "horrific" and affirming national solidarity with the victims and the people of Minnesota.
"Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America. God bless the great people of Minnesota, a truly great place!" Trump said.
The attack has sent shockwaves through Minnesota’s political community, with lawmakers across the political spectrum condemning the violence and urging unity.
Security Concerns Rise
The discovery of a manifesto listing other lawmakers has prompted increased security measures across the state. Minnesota’s Capitol building and other government facilities have ramped up protective protocols, and several public officials have been advised to remain at undisclosed locations.
Melissa Hortman, 54, was a respected leader in Minnesota politics. She served as Speaker of the House from 2019 to 2023 and was known for her advocacy on climate action, labor rights, and education reform. Her husband, Mark, was active in local civic affairs.
Senator Hoffman, who represents parts of the northwest Twin Cities metro area, has served in the Minnesota Senate since 2011 and is known for his bipartisan work on healthcare and disability services.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any information that might lead to the suspect’s capture. The motive behind the attack is still under investigation, but officials have confirmed that political ideology appears to have played a key role.
