Italy sack coach Luciano Spalletti following Norway defeat
Luciano Spalletti confirmed on Sunday that he has been dismissed from his position as head coach of the Italian national team, following a crushing 3-0 loss to Norway in their World Cup qualifying opener.
Despite the decision, he will remain in charge for Monday’s fixture against Moldova.
Speaking at a press conference, Spalletti said: “Last night, I had a meeting with President [Gabriele] Gravina. He informed me that I would be relieved of my duties as head coach of the national team.”
Spalletti expressed disappointment at the decision, adding, “I had no intention of stepping down. I would have preferred to stay and continue doing my job. I’ll be on the bench for the match against Moldova tomorrow evening, and then we’ll address the contract situation.”
The defeat to Norway marked a troubling start for Italy in their World Cup qualifying campaign, prompting swift action from the Italian Football Federation.
