Heavily intoxicated Lithuanian tourist arrested for assaulting police and trespassing

Gönyeli, Cyprus – June 14, 2025 — A Lithuanian tourist has been arrested after forcibly entering a residence in Gönyeli, causing property damage, and assaulting a police officer attempting to detain him.

The suspect, identified as RR, was found to be heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident and initially refused to provide his identity.

The suspect appeared before court today on charges of assaulting a police officer, obstructing a public officer, trespassing, and causing intentional damage to property.

According to the police, the incident occurred on June 14, 2025, at approximately 10:40 p.m., when the suspect began banging on the door of a residence occupied by an individual identified as N.B. When the occupant partially opened the door, RR allegedly forced his way in, unlawfully entering the premises. Once inside, he damaged property by breaking three coffee cups and one glass, amounting to a total loss of 250 TL.

Police responded to a complaint and attempted to arrest RR at the scene. During the arrest, he reportedly struck one of the officers in the mouth with his left arm, causing a tear to the officer’s tongue.

Authorities noted that the suspect resisted arrest, refused to speak, and did not carry any form of identification. A breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol level of 239‰, indicating severe intoxication.

It wasn’t until 8:00 a.m. the following morning that RR disclosed his identity and confirmed he was a Lithuanian national. Investigations revealed he had entered the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) from South Cyprus on June 3, 2025, under tourist status.

Police requested an additional one-day detention to continue the investigation.

The court granted the request, and the suspect remains in custody as inquiries continue.
