Premier League referee David Coote has been formally charged by the Football Association (FA) over comments made about former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp in a video that went viral last year.
The video, reportedly filmed in July 2020 and widely shared on social media, showed Coote allegedly using abusive language towards Klopp. Following a full investigation by PGMOL, the governing body for English referees, Coote was dismissed from his role after his conduct was deemed unacceptable.
In a statement on Tuesday, the FA confirmed the charge:
“It is alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting language, contrary to FA Rule E3.1,” the statement read.
“It is further alleged that this constitutes an ‘Aggravated Breach’ under Rule E3.2, due to a reference – whether explicit or implied – to nationality.”
Rule E3 relates to conduct that could bring the game into disrepute, including inappropriate language and behavior, and actions that undermine the integrity of officials.
Back in November, Coote was also under FA scrutiny for allegedly discussing a yellow card decision with a friend prior to a match, a claim he denied. The FA clarified that no charges were brought regarding gambling misconduct, which had also been investigated.
UEFA, Europe’s football governing body, has imposed a separate ban on Coote, prohibiting him from officiating in any of its competitions until June 2026. The 42-year-old has since issued an apology for his behavior.
Further controversy emerged when The Sun released footage reportedly showing Coote appearing to snort a white substance during his time as an official at Euro 2024.
