Driver detained following traffic accident that critically injured elderly woman

A man identified as AK has been detained for one day in connection with a serious traffic accident that left a 60-year-old woman critically injured in Balıkesir.

The incident occurred on the evening of June 18, 2025, around 9:30 p.m., on Hüseyin Özgit Street. According to police testimony presented in court, AK was driving a vehicle when he struck Filiz Cıgıt with the front left side of his car in front of a residential property.

Police stated that Cıgıt was immediately transported to Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital by emergency medical services. Medical evaluations revealed that she sustained fractures to her arm and hip, along with a cerebral hemorrhage. Authorities confirmed that her condition remains critical.

The police informed the court that the investigation is ongoing and multifaceted. In light of the evidence, they requested an extension of AK’s detention for one additional day to facilitate further inquiries.

The judge ordered that the suspect remain in custody for 24 hours pending further investigation.

The case continues to be under active investigation as authorities seek to determine the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
