Civil defense organization: TRNC have 268 shelters with a capacity of 200,000
Lefkoşa, June 16, 2025 — The Civil Defense Organization of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has released a comprehensive statement regarding the country’s shelter infrastructure.
The announcement comes in the wake of rising tensions in the Middle East, particularly between Israel and Iran, and aims to raise public awareness despite the lack of a direct threat to the TRNC.
268 Shelters, 200,000-Person Capacity
According to the statement, there are a total of 268 shelters across the TRNC — 10 public and 258 private — with an estimated capacity to accommodate around 200,000 people. It was also emphasized that large hotels and buildings with spacious basements are included in emergency shelter planning.
Shelter Fund Abolished in 2014
The Shelter Fund, established under Law No. 44/2000 to finance the construction and maintenance of shelters, was abolished on February 17, 2014. Before its termination, the fund was used for the construction of public buildings in Gazimağusa and Lefkoşa, as well as for upgrading nationwide siren systems. Since 2014, its revenues have been redirected to the Ministry of Finance under the name “Liquidated Fund Revenues” and later “Shelter Contribution Revenues,” thus cutting off the Civil Defense Organization’s access to the fund.
Drill to Be Held on June 25 in Gazimağusa
To enhance public preparedness for emergencies, a regional drill will take place in Gazimağusa on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. The drill will involve the use of shelters and siren systems. Citizens can find the nearest assembly points by visiting the official Civil Defense website: www.sivilsavunma.gov.ct.tr.
Those gathering at designated areas will be directed to nearby shelters by Civil Defense personnel and Civil Defense Volunteer Organization members.
Public Notification Channels
Official announcements and emergency directions will be broadcast through: Radio Vatan, Radio Nihavent, Radio Türkü.
Additionally, the national siren system, mosque announcement systems, and the Civil Defense Organization’s official social media accounts will be used for communication.
Call for Personal Preparedness
The Civil Defense urged citizens to create temporary shelter spaces at home and prepare an emergency kit containing: water and basic food supplies, first aid kit, portable radio, flashlight and spare batteries.
“No Direct Threat, But Preparedness is Key”
The organization stressed that there is currently no direct threat to the TRNC but affirmed that all precautions and efforts are aimed at educating and preparing the public for any scenario.
The Civil Defense Organization stated that they will continue working to ensure that the public is resilient and ready under all circumstances.
