Woman allegedly stole one million Turkish Lira worth of cash and gold from employer in Lefkoşa

Lefkoşa, Cyprus – A 26-year-old woman who works as maid a residence in Lefkoşa has been arrested in connection with a major theft involving nearly one million Turkish Lira in cash and jewelry from her employer.

The suspect identified as M.B. was brought before the court charged with “theft” after allegedly stealing large sums of money and gold from a residence in Hamitköy, where he had been working.

Police officer who testified in court stated that the suspect is accused of stealing from a safe between March 19 and April 29. The stolen items reportedly include £12,000, €3,500, $3,000, and approximately 415,000 Turkish Lira worth of gold.

According to the police, the theft came to light following a formal complaint, after which a police investigation led to M.B.'s arrest on May 7. The suspect is believed to have sold the stolen gold to a jeweler in Girne for 350,000 TL.

The court also heard that M.B. has been residing in northern Cyprus without a valid permit for the past 211 days, since October 9, 2024.

While the suspect denied stealing any money from the safe in his initial verbal statement to police, she admitted to taking the gold and expressed willingness to compensate the victim, citing her responsibility toward his two-year-old child.

The judge taking into account the preliminary evidence and ongoing investigation, ordered the suspect to remain in custody for one additional day.
