Two students accused of stealing cosmetics worth over 10,000 TL

Lefkosia, May 20, 2025 – Two women accused of stealing cosmetics worth more than 10,000 Turkish Lira from a supermarket in Demirhan were released on bail following a court hearing.

The suspects, ZB and BT, both Turkish nationals admitted to the offense, citing financial hardship as their motivation.

According to police testimony presented by in court, the incident took place on May 16, 2025, around 7:20 PM. The two women allegedly placed various women’s cosmetic products — valued at 10,259 TL — into their bags without paying and left the store.

The theft was reported to the authorities, and both women were arrested the same day. A search of their residences led to the recovery of the stolen items, which were seized as evidence. Police stated that both suspects voluntarily confessed and accepted the charges against them.

The police informed the court that BT is residing in the country on a student visa, while ZB is in possession of a work permit. Based on their residency status, the prosecution requested appropriate bail conditions.

During the hearing, ZB, a mother of one, told the court she is studying to become a beauty specialist and had no choice but to commit the crime due to financial strain.

“I earn 38,000 TL monthly, but my rent is 25,000 TL. For my practical exams, we needed cosmetic products. I couldn’t afford them. I am deeply sorry and very remorseful,” said ZB, who also stated she is struggling to support her child.

The suspect BT, who is also studying beauty therapy, echoed her co-defendant’s sentiments. “My mother had sent me money, but I feared it wouldn’t be enough for the products. I’m truly sorry,” she said.

The presiding judge ordered that both women be released on the condition that they are prohibited from leaving the country, must report to the police once a week, and each sign a personal bail bond of 100,000 TL.

The case remains under judicial review.
