TRNC fire department bans the lighting of fire in open places until October 31
Lefkosia — The Fire Department has issued a public reminder that lighting fires without a permit — even for purposes such as cleaning or heating — is strictly prohibited until October 31.
In a written statement, the General Directorate of Police Fire Department (PGM) emphasized the serious risk of fires igniting in unsuitable areas, warning that even small flames can quickly spiral out of control.
The statement highlighted key fire safety regulations and issued the following specific warnings:
-Cigarette Disposal: Do not discard cigarette butts — even if presumed extinguished — onto roadsides, forested areas, open land, into trash bins, or on flammable materials.
-Grill Safety: Avoid using highly flammable liquids such as thinner or gasoline to ignite barbecues. Ensure the surrounding area is free of easily flammable materials like wood, fabric, or lumber.
-Electrical Hazards: Do not connect multiple high-consumption electrical devices (e.g. irons, toasters, hairdryers) to power strips or extension cords, as this significantly increases fire risk. Instead, plug such devices directly into wall sockets. Avoid using worn or folded extension cables, and never leave high-consumption devices running unattended.
-Kitchen Fires: If oil in a fryer catches fire, turn off the electricity immediately and use a fire extinguisher to put it out. If no extinguisher is available, place a damp cloth over the fryer — never use water, as it can cause the fire to spread.
-Tree Branches and Power Lines: Trim tree branches that come into contact with power lines. Before trimming, cut off electricity supply to the area, clear dry vegetation underneath, and keep firefighting equipment nearby. Any sightings of dangerous transformers, exposed or touching power lines, or branches that may fall on wires in poor weather should be reported immediately to the 188 Electrical Fault line.
-Vehicle and Machinery Maintenance: Ensure timely maintenance of private, commercial, fuel-carrying, and agricultural vehicles. Proper exhaust and tire inspections can prevent fuel leaks, short circuits, and sparks from triggering fires.
-Preparedness: Keep a fire extinguisher in your home, workplace, and vehicles, and make sure you know how to use it. This can make a critical difference in containing fires before they spread.
The department concluded by urging the public to report any signs of smoke or fire without delay by contacting: 199 Fire Emergency Line, 177 Forest Fire Line, 155 Police Emergency Line
The Fire Department reiterated that community vigilance and responsible behavior are essential to preventing fire-related disasters during this high-risk period.
