Suspect caught with cannabis and cocaine in police operation in north Cyprus
Girne, 17 May 2025 — A major anti-drug operation dubbed “Zehir Kalkanı” (Poison Shield) in the Boğazköy area of Girne led to the arrest of an individual, who was found in possession of a substantial quantity of illegal narcotics.
The suspect identified only as MSK was arrested in a police operation on the afternoon of Saturday May 17 in Girne. The suspect was brought to the Girne District Court on Sunday May 18 on charges unlawful possession and supply of cannabis and cocaine.
Appearing before the court, the in its testimony stated that, on 17 May 2025 at approximately 3:30 PM, a joint operation by the Narcotics and Anti-Smuggling Directorate and the Crime Prevention Unit targeted the suspect in the parking area of a supermarket in Boğazköy. A search of the vehicle Kılıçoğlu was using revealed a variety of substances suspected to be narcotics.
The evidence seized included: two packages wrapped in stretch film containing approximately 56 grams of a substance believed to be cannabis, a colorful packet labeled LemonCherry containing roughly 10 grams of suspected cannabis, eleven vacuum-sealed packages totaling approximately 308 grams of cannabis, individually wrapped in stretch film and transparent nylon bags, and a colorful packet labeled SunsetRunty believed to contain approximately 10 grams of cocaine.
All items were confiscated as evidence.
A court-authorized search was conducted at his residence in Gönyeli between 5:30 PM and 5:50 PM on the same day. No additional illegal items were found during this search.
The police informed the court that the suspect voluntarily provided a statement admitting to the offenses and subsequently underwent a medical examination. Due to the operation taking place over the weekend, the seized items and packaging materials have not yet been sent to the state chemistry laboratory for analysis and fingerprint testing.
Citing the need to verify the suspect’s statement and to conduct further forensic examinations, police requested a three-day detention period.
