Massive drug bust in Diyarbakır, Turkey: Over 7.5 Million cannabis plants seized
Diyarbakır, Turkey — In one of the largest anti-narcotics operations in recent memory, Turkish security forces have seized over 7.5 million cannabis and skunk plants in Diyarbakır, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Interior.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that the operation, supported by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and remote sensing systems, led to the discovery and seizure of 7,543,818 cannabis and skunk plants, which had the potential to produce approximately 174 tons of powdered cannabis. A total of eight suspects were apprehended in connection with the cultivation and distribution of the illegal crops.
The coordinated operation is part of an ongoing nationwide effort to combat drug trafficking and organized crime. Authorities emphasized the use of advanced surveillance technology in locating the vast plantations, which were reportedly concealed across rural and mountainous areas.
Minister Yerlikaya reiterated the government’s commitment to fighting narcotics, stating, “We will continue our determined struggle against drug production and trafficking, using every means at our disposal to protect our youth and future generations.”
Further investigations into the network behind the cultivation are underway.
