Man assaults ex-wife in Lefkosa as domestic violence continue to prevail in north Cyprus

Lefkosa, May 27, 2025 — A man identified as B.Ç. has been ordered to remain in police custody for three days following allegations of domestic violence and verbal abuse in Lefkosia. 

The incident, which took place on May 26, involved serious assault charges and has prompted a police investigation still in its early stages.

According to testimony presented by the police at the Lefkosia District Court, the suspect confronted his 34-year-old ex-wife at around 9:00 p.m. in the parking area of the Atatürk Sports Hall, a public location in Lefkosa.

The confrontation reportedly began as a verbal dispute after the victim blocked the suspect on her phone. During the altercation, B.Ç. allegedly verbally insulted the woman, saying, “You should be a mother first, then speak,” before physically assaulting her.

The victim was taken to Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital, where medical staff confirmed she had suffered a broken nose. She received treatment in the hospital's Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Department.

B.Ç. was arrested on May 27. Police informed the court that the investigation is ongoing, with further statements to be collected and surveillance footage from the area still to be reviewed.

Citing the need for additional investigative work, the prosecution requested the suspect remain in custody. 

The presiding judge granted the request, ordering that B.Ç. be held for three days while the investigation continues.

The case has attracted public attention as authorities continue to address issues related to gender-based violence and public safety.
