Israel and Hamas resume ceasefire talks amid escalating violence in Gaza

Israel and Hamas resumed ceasefire negotiations on Saturday in Qatar, both parties confirmed, even as Israeli forces intensified airstrikes across Gaza, killing hundreds and preparing for a large-scale ground operation.

Palestinian health officials reported at least 146 people killed in the third day of Israel’s latest bombing campaign—one of the deadliest since the March ceasefire collapsed. Hospitals continue to treat hundreds of wounded, while many remain trapped beneath the rubble.

Israel announced a new military operation, “Operation Gideon’s Chariots,” aimed at capturing more territory in Gaza. The campaign follows a visit to the region by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Since early March, Israel has blocked all supplies from entering Gaza, sparking growing international concern for the enclave’s 2.3 million residents.

Taher Al-Nono, spokesperson for Hamas leadership, told Reuters that fresh indirect talks had begun in Doha, covering all issues without preconditions. Hamas reiterated its demands for an end to the war, a prisoner exchange, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid into the territory.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the talks were underway but noted that Israel had not agreed to a ceasefire or to lift its blockade as a condition for negotiations. The Israeli military stated its goal was to establish "operational control" over parts of Gaza through ongoing airstrikes and troop mobilization.

According to Gaza’s health ministry, most of Saturday's casualties were concentrated in northern Gaza, including Beit Lahiya, the Jabalia refugee camp, and the southern city of Khan Younis. At least 459 people were reported injured. Israel had previously instructed residents to evacuate northern areas.

In a statement, Hamas described the assault on northern Gaza as a “systematic campaign of extermination” and urged Arab leaders meeting in Baghdad to take concrete actions to stop the attacks and ensure aid delivery.
