A 27-year-old Indian man working as a food delivery driver was killed Friday evening in a traffic collision on a main avenue in Limassol, Cyprus.
The moped rider was named at Indian national Nalla Naveen.
The incident occurred around 20:35 when a 21-year-old driver traveling southbound on Dionysou Street attempted an illegal right turn at the junction with Makariou Avenue, cutting off another vehicle driven by a 25-year-old Limassol resident.
As a result of the collision, the second vehicle, which had been traveling eastbound on Makariou Avenue, lost control and struck the delivery driver’s motorcycle, which was heading westbound on the same avenue.
Ambulance services rushed the motorcyclist to Limassol Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A helmet was found at the scene, with investigators examining whether the victim was wearing it at the time of the collision.
A young woman in her sixth month of pregnancy was traveling in the first vehicle and was taken to a private clinic as a precautionary measure. She is reported to be in good health.
Both drivers tested negative for alcohol and drugs. The 21-year-old driver of the first vehicle is expected to be taken to Limassol Traffic Police to provide a statement, with authorities not ruling out the possibility of an arrest warrant being issued.
Traffic police continue their investigation into the circumstances of the fatal accident. Makariou Avenue remained closed until 11 pm at the site of the collision.
Dozens of pedestrians reportedly witnessed the fatal collision, which occurred in a busy central area of the city.
