Cleaner accused of stealing from three homes remanded in custody

Lefkoşa, May 31, 2025 — A woman accused of stealing money and jewelry from three separate homes where she worked as a cleaner in Lefkoşa, Girne, and Gönyeli, has been ordered by the court to remain in prison for a period not exceeding two months.

The first incident took place on January 4, 2025, in Boğazköy. According to police, the suspect identified only as MB stole three quarter gold coins and six "Maşallah" gold charms from a wardrobe shelf in a bedroom while cleaning the residence.

The second theft occurred between March 19 and April 29 at another home in the Hamitköy area of Lefkoşa, where the suspect was also working as a cleaner. She allegedly stole £12,000, €3,500, $3,000, and gold valued at 415,000 Turkish Lira from a safe in the house. Police later discovered that she sold the gold to a jeweler in Girne for 350,000 TL.

The third incident took place between January 20 and May 11 in Gönyeli. The suspoect is accused of stealing various items of jewelry worth approximately 200,000 TL from a makeup drawer in the bedroom of the home where she was employed.

The police also stated that four individuals previously detained in connection with the case were released due to lack of evidence. However, solid evidence had been obtained against MB, leading to a formal request for her remand.

It was also revealed that the suspect had been residing in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus without a valid residence permit since October 9, 2024, and that the portion of the investigation she could potentially interfere with had been completed.

After reviewing the testimony, the judge ordered that the suspect be held in prison for up to two months pending trial.
