Attempted stabbing in Lefkoşa: Suspect remanded for two days
Lefkoşa, 31 May 2025 – An individual accused of attempting to stab a woman in Lefkoşa, has been ordered to remain in police custody for two days as investigations continue.
The incident, which occurred in the Çağlayan district, has raised concerns over public safety and the growing prevalence of violent confrontations.
The suspect identified only as ZD appeared before the Lefkoşa District Court on Saturday May 31 on charges including attempted murder, carrying a weapon with intent to intimidate, unlawful possession of a knife, and intentional property damage.
During the court proceedings, the police testified that the incident took place at approximately 5:00 PM on May 30, 2025, near Özmep Market on Şehit Albay Karaoğlanoğlu Street.
According to the officer, the suspect allegedly blamed a woman, identified only by the initials G.K., for encouraging his brother to commit a crime. In retaliation, he reportedly attempted to stab her in the abdomen using an unidentified sharp metal knife.
Fortunately, G.K. was not injured. She managed to shield herself by holding a black, unbranded handbag labeled “To te bag” in front of her. The knife pierced the bag, causing damage valued at 500 TL.
Following a formal complaint, police arrested ZD under court order. He has since provided a voluntary statement regarding the incident.
The police emphasized the gravity of the case, noting the necessity of verifying the statements and reviewing surveillance footage from the area as part of the ongoing investigation. He requested a two-day remand to facilitate these efforts.
After reviewing the testimony, the judge approved the request, ordering ZD to remain in custody for 48 hours as the investigation proceeds.
The case continues to unfold as authorities seek to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attempted attack.
