Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic end coaching partnership after six months
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Murray’s camp, confirming that the two former world number ones have decided to part ways ahead of the French Open, which begins on May 25 at Roland Garros.
Djokovic had enlisted Murray as his coach in January ahead of the Australian Open, in a move that reunited two of the sport’s fiercest former rivals in a new professional dynamic. Despite early optimism and a pledge in February to work together for an “indefinite period,” the duo has now split as Djokovic looks to recalibrate his form on clay, beginning with the Geneva Open (May 18–24).
“Thanks to Novak for the unbelievable opportunity to work together and thanks to his team for all their hard work over the past six months,” Murray said in a statement. “I wish Novak all the best for the rest of the season.”
Djokovic reciprocated the appreciation, praising Murray’s effort and their strengthened bond during the partnership.
“I really enjoyed deepening our friendship together,” said Djokovic, who leads their head-to-head record 25–11.
A Disappointing Run for Djokovic
Djokovic’s 2025 season has been uncharacteristically turbulent. After reaching the Australian Open semi-finals in January, he was forced to withdraw due to injury. A runner-up finish at the Miami Open in March hinted at a return to form, but a straight-sets loss to rising Czech star Jakub Mensik in the final cut short those hopes.
His recent clay-court results have also raised concerns. Djokovic suffered early exits at both the Monte Carlo and Madrid Masters, and then withdrew from the Italian Open in Rome, fueling speculation about his fitness and form. No official reason was provided for his withdrawal.
With the French Open looming, Djokovic has accepted a wildcard entry into the Geneva Open, a move widely seen as an attempt to find rhythm and confidence before returning to Paris, where he will seek a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title.
The 38-year-old Serbian star, who won Olympic gold in Paris last year, will now regroup with his core team and aim to revive his season on the clay of Roland Garros.
