18 people injured in knife attack in Hamburg, four in critical condition

Eighteen people were injured in a knife attack at Hamburg station on Friday evening, according to Germany’s Bild newspaper. 

Police have confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the incident.

Of those injured, four are in critical condition and six others sustained serious injuries, Bild reported. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Authorities identified the suspect as a 39-year-old woman who surrendered to police without resistance.

“At this stage, we have no indication that the woman acted with a political motive,” said police spokesperson Florian Abbenseth. “Instead, we are focusing our investigation on the possibility that she may have been experiencing a mental health crisis.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the incident as “shocking” in a message posted on social media platform X.

“My thoughts are with the victims and their families,” he wrote.
