US Embassy's social media post spark backlash in Cyprus

A message shared from the official X account of the US Embassy in Nicosia south Cyprus has created controversy in the south.

The statement by the US Secretary of State Marc Rubio's: "This is the safest border I've ever seen" along with a photo of the Mexico-US border mural, one of Trump's immigration policy actions, shared on the social media account of the US embassy in south Cyprus on Sunday April 27, was met with backlash.

"What a disappointing post. Don't you read the environment at all? How can something like this be shared, especially in a place like Cyprus? Your embassy is just a few hundred meters away from an illegal border that you claim needs to be dismantled. There are many comments saying how shameless this post is. Maybe we should reconsider?" one social media user reacted.

Another user wrote: "Secure border? Against Mexicans? The embassy in Cyprus should be ashamed to share such statements in a country divided by the Turkish 'occupation'."
