South Cyprus police arrest African asylum seeker for working illegally
Police in south Cyprus on Sunday arrested a man from Africa for working illegally in the country.
Greek Cypriot police in a statement on Monday said it arrested a 39-year-old man at around 11:00am on Sunday for illegally working in a restaurant located in Paphos. The owner of the restaurant was also arrested.
According to police, the worker was arrested by immigration officers who checked the restaurant following a tip off.
At the scene they found a cleaner of African origin, identified as a 39-year-old political asylum seeker. Police determined the man did not have a work permit and arrested him.
The owner of the restaurant, a permanent resident, was also arrested. Both were charged in writing and released to be summoned at a later date.
