Man in south Cyprus looses over €55,000 in online romance scam

A 60-year-old man resident in Limassol, south Cyprus has lost €55,000 in an online scam, Greek Cypriot police said on Tuesday.

According to the police report, the man made a complaint to Limassol CID that between 2020 and 2021, he received a text message through a messaging app, from a woman residing abroad.

The scammer (woman) allegedly said that a relative of hers was ill and in need of money for treatment.

The 60-year-old man told the police that the woman received a total of €55,450 from him through 14 separate transactions.

The case is still under investigation.
