There was a threefold increase in the number of Greek Cypriots crossing the border to the TRNC compared to 2018.
Based on the data presented to the Greek Cypriot assembly by the
Ministry of Justice, between 1 January-30 September 2019, 1,776,343
crossings from South Cyprus to the TRNC were recorded. In the same
period of time in 2018, 658,741 crossings were made from the South to
the TRNC, Greek Cypriot daily ‘Phileleftheros’ reported.
According to the news, between January 1-September 30, 2018, the
number of Greek Cypriot vehicles crossing from South Cyprus to the TRNC
was 309,374, while in the same period of 2019, this rate increased by
66.7 per cent and rose to 928,221.
According to the data of the Greek Cypriot Ministry of Justice, the
newspaper said that the number of Turkish Cypriots crossing to South
Cyprus has also increased to 791,103.
According to the news, during the same period, 308,420 Turkish
Cypriot vehicles crossed to South Cyprus in 2018, while in 2019, this
figure increased by 18.15 per cent to 376, 835.
The newspaper also pointed out that these statistics did not include
the border crossing points at Pergamos/Beyarmudu, Strovilya/Akyar and
the regions controlled by the British bases.
