A Kurdish man who crossed into north Cyprus from south during the weekend was
arrested on accusation that he is a member of the
Democratic Union Party (PYD) which is considered a terrorist
organisation by Turkey, reports said on Monday.
According to Turkish Cypriot media, the man, Mehmet Akgul, had
participated in last month's protest against Turkish operation in
Syria during a demonstration in Limassol, south Cyprus where he was holding the PYD’s
flag.
Akgul was to a court in Lefkosa on Sunday and given a
three-day remand.
He was accused of being a member of and defending an illegal
organisation and for spreading propaganda on behalf of this
organisation.
TRNC authorities says they were investigating the reasons for his crossing.
