Students shuns Haspolat Municipality Houses due to economic crisis and high rents

The Haspolat Municipality Houses has for the first time in many years, under-occupied by students due to financial crisis.

According to a report by the Turkish Cypriot daily, Havadis, the apartment built and designed with the aim of making it easy for people, especially students with limited financial means to afford, has experienced a drop in student occupants for the first time since it was built by the Lefkosa municipality.

The houses historically inhabited by university students, are rented out by owners who never experienced any issues to date as the apartments were rented out within a week.

But due to the recent economic crisis as a result of the increase in exchange rates that hit university students, students are unable to pay for the apartment.

In the TRNC, house rent are paid in foreign currencies and this has some how pushed students back who now seek other alternatives.

To this end, many apartments have been left vacant this year in the Haspolat municipality houses, which university students often preferred in the past.

*What can be done to savage the situation?
