Plastic bag charge in north Cyprus to start this weekend

Leaflets are being distributed across the country to warn consumers that a ban on free plastic carrier bags will come into effect on Saturday, December 1 — and traders that fail to charge customers could incur a fine equal to the monthly minimum wage, currently 2,620TL.

The Environmental Protection Department is to launch spot-checks to ensure that all shoppers are now charged a fee to be set by ministers — expected to be around 25 kuruş per bag — and is inviting non compliance to be reported to its 123 hotline.
