Mild earthquake recorded off Lefke

There was a mild earthquake of magnitude 4.3 on Monday morning recorded at about 141 km from Lefke. 

In a statement by the Department of Meteorology Seismology Service, on Monday, it said that the earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale happened at a depth of 44 kilometres in the sea from Lefke, north Cyprus during the early hours of Monday morning.

No further tremors or injuries were recorded.

The last earthquake that was reported in Cyprus was a 4.0 magnitude quake around eight months ago south-southwest of Paphos.

Earthquakes occurring at a depth of less than 70km are classified as ‘shallow-focus’ earthquakes and are found within the earth’s outer crustal layer, while ‘deep focus’ earthquakes occur within the deeper subduction zones of the earth.
