On Saturday, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
became husband and wife, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and the new
reigning king and queen of romance as the tied the knot in a colorful royal wedding that blended ancient English ritual with
African American culture, watched up close by royals and celebrities and
from afar by a global millions of TV audience.
The so hotly anticipated and debated royal wedding was full of sweet, inspiring,
groundbreaking moments that spoke to the couple's unique character.
The couple’s decision to wed on a Saturday went against tradition, as royal weddings usually take place on a weekday. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wed on a Friday and the Queen on a Thursday.
The wedding took place in St George's Chapel
at Windsor Castle at 12pm. They became the 16th royal couple to
celebrate their marriage at Windsor Castle since 1863.
Wearing a veil, diamond tiara and a sleek dress with a long train,
Meghan was accompanied up the aisle at St George’s Chapel in Windsor by
Harry’s father, Prince Charles, before she and Harry exchanged vows and
were proclaimed husband and wife.The union of Harry, a former royal wild child and sixth-in-line to the British throne, and actress Meghan, a divorcee whose mother is African-American and father is white, brought a measure of modern glamour and diversity into the monarchy.
The couple kissed on the steps of the chapel as they emerged into the sunlight after the ceremony, delighting vast crowds who had descended on the genteel town to witness a spectacular show of British pomp and pageantry.
In attendance were the Queen Elizabeth, senior royals and celebrities ranging from Oprah Winfrey to Elton John, George Clooney and David Beckham.
