Cypriot athlete breaks rowing world record

Cypriot world rowing champion Anna Ioannou, 25, has broken the women’s lightweight 1,000-metre closed rowing world record in the 19-29 age group on Sunday in Limassol, Cyprus.

Ioannou clocked in at 3.30.6. The record was held by 27-year-old Sanita K. Hansen at 3.31.5.
The Cypriot athlete holds the women’s 2,000-metre record. She clinched third place in the World Games in Trakai, Lithuania, in 2012 in the young women’s lightweight single sketch under 23, and second place in the World Coastal Rowing Championship in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2014.

Ioannou, a trainer and athlete of the Limassol Nautical Club, was born in September 1992 in Limassol.

She is a graduate of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science of the Aristoteleio University.

She started rowing at the age of 12 along with her brother, champion and trainer Aristotelis Ioannou. In November 2004 she joined the Kyrenia Nautical Club, in 2006 the Thessaloniki Nautical Club, in 2014 the Ioannina Nautical Club, and in 2016 the Limassol Nautical Club.
