Muguruza blows away Venus to claim first Wimbledon crown

An inspired Garbine Muguruza stormed to her first ever Wimbledon title on Saturday, blowing away in-form 37-year-old American Venus Williams 7-5 6-0 with arguably the best performance of her career after tight and tense early exchanges.

The first women’s final played under the Centre Court roof, saw both players began with two comfortable service holds with the Spaniard cutting loose after early tense exchanges, winning nine straight games to crush the demoralized Venus. 

Venus who was trying to become the oldest woman to win Wimbledon for 109 years, lost the second set to love in an equally astonishing turnaround for Muguruza after she absorbed everything the American could throw at her before taking control and inflicting a punishing triple break in the final set.

The victory was the 23-year-old Venezuela-born second grand slam victory to add to last year's French Open and her second Wimbledon final, having lost to Venus's sister Serena on the same stage in 2015.

Two years ago I lost in the final to Serena and she told me one day I was going to maybe win and hey, two years after here I am, she said.

I played very well since the first game, and I kept the level, which is very hard because, you're nervous... I was just very composed," she added.
