Donald Trump decries 'witch hunt' after special counsel appointed in Russia investigation

US President Donald Trump has declared himself the target of a "witch hunt." Trump made the accusation on Thursday, a day after the US Justice Department announced the appointment of a special counsel to investigate alleged Russian's interference in the 2016 presidential election. 

According to him, the Russia probe is the "single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!" 

He also suggested on his Twitter handle that Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and the Obama administration committed "illegal acts" and "there was never a special counsel appointed!"

"With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel (sic) appointed!" he Tweeted.

"This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!" he followed up.

It was announced Wednesday that former FBI Director Robert Mueller has been appointed as a special counsel to oversee the investigation into Russia's meddling in last election and any possible ties between Trump campaign associates and Russia.

Muller's appointment comes during a tumultuous period for Trump after he fired FBI Director James Comey and reports of a memo written by Comey alleging that Trump had requested that he drop an investigation into former national security adviser Mike Flynn.
