Wole Soyinka - 'I will not destroy my U.S. green card yet'

Earlier in the week before the US presidential election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, we reported that Nigerian Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, during a seminar at Oxford University two weeks ago, vowed to cut his green card if Trump wins the US presidency. Now fast forward to few days later, the Nobel Laureate has come out to say he will not be destroying his green card yet.

Soyinka has come under serious fire and backlash from Nigerians on social media since Trump was confirmed as the new US president-elect on Wednesday calling on him to fulfill his promise to destroy his green card if Trump is elected President.

However in an interview with The Newsweek on Wednesday, Soyinka who lectures in several universities in the US, said everyone should wait until Trump is inaugurated as US 45th President on January 20th, 2017 to see him take a decision.
"Why don’t we wait until Trump actually takes office? I am just going about my normal commitments, but definitely not getting into any more commitments, let’s put it that way for now,” he said.
Soyinka  also expressed fears that Trumps victory will affect the US government's support to Nigeria in the fight against Boko Haram “One should expect that level of collaboration to diminish. Trump’s mentality is one of, ‘What are we doing there? What business do we have over there? I foresee Trump dismissing that kind of expectation offhand and closing in, shrinking, becoming smaller in terms of [the U.S.’s] presence in other parts of the world,” he said.
