Stan Wawrinka fights back to defeat Novak Djokovic to win US Open

US OPENS: 31-year-old Swiss Stan Wawrinka has defeated world number one Novak Djokovic at the US Open on Sunday. Third seed Stan Wawrinka fought back to beat the defending champion Djokovic 6-7(1), 6-4, 7-5, and 6-3 in four sets to win the US Open for the third Grand Slam title of his career.

Wawrinka who has now won 11 finals on the bounce had defeated Djokovic on his way to winning the 2014 Australian Open and 2015 French Open, and denied Djokovic a third grand slam title this year following his wins in Australia and France.
“This is amazing. I came here without expecting. But every time I step on the court I try to win every match,” said Wawrinka.
Djokovic, who is the third man to hold all four grand slam singles titles at once after his victory at Roland Garros in June, went into the final with a 19-4 career head-to-head record against Wawrinka.

Speaking during his on-court post-match interview, Djokovic said to Wawrinka;
"You were the more courageous player. He just deserves this title. Well done."
"He loves to play in the big matches," Djokovic said.
"He comes up with his best game. He's so solid from both corners. He's got a good slice and amazing one-handed backhand, all corners. Big serve. Moves well. He's a very complete player" Djokovic added.
Wawrinka is now a Wimbledon title away from completing the career grand slam, while Djokovic has lost five of his seven finals at Flushing Meadows.
