Cyprus Update: Leaders tables different proposal regarding guarantees
Cyprus: Greek Cypriot president Nicos Anastasiades after Friday meeting with Turkish Cypriot Leader Mustafa Akinci in continuation of the ongoing reunification talks between both Cypriots communities said that a different proposal regarding guarantees was tabled during the meeting but
it did not mean the matter was settled.
Friday’s meeting, the fourth in the ongoing rounds of intensified talks, included brainstorming on three chapters including territory, security, and guarantees.
The 1960 treaty provides for three guarantor powers, Turkey, Greece, and the UK.
The seven meetings which was initially scheduled by both leaders to end by September 14 will now increase to eight said Anastasiades who announced that there will be an additional meeting on September 10 to discuss various outstanding issues.

“I heard something different from the 1960 treaties,” Anastasiades said.
“But it does not mean we agree with it.”The Greek Cypriot community has made it clear that it would not accept any deal that includes guarantees and permanent stationing of Turkish troops on the island with Greece calling for the guarantors system to be scrapped.

“What is important is that concerns and views were exchanged during brainstorming, and each side set its ‘red lines’,” he said.Source: Cyprus Mail
