6 wounded in Philadelphia shooting spree

US: Six people including two police officers and four civilians have been injured during a shooting spree in Philadelphia late Friday night where the suspected gunman was later killed by responding police officers.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said Sergeant Sylvia Young, a 19-year veteran of the department, was shot at least eight times by an approaching gunman as she sat in her vehicle.
Speaking at a news conference, Ross said;
"He just walks up on her ... he just fired. He didn't say anything.''
Ross noted that the gunman fired about 15 rounds into Young's vehicle.

Ross said nearby police officers heard the gunshots and began pursuing the gunman on foot and during the chase, the gunman fired shots into a tavern, hitting a security guard in the leg.

The gunman then used a woman from the bar as a shield before shooting her.
He later fired shots into a car, seriously wounding a man and a woman, Ross said.
The chase ended when the shooter exchanged gunfire with police in an alley, wounding a police officer at the University of Pennsylvania.
Ross said the gunman was killed during the gunfight.
"We have a lot of unanswered questions ... this is a completely bizarre situation," he said.
The police officer shot in the alley was expected to survive and the conditions of the injured civilians were not immediately clear said Ross.
"Some civilians are not in good shape at all," Ross said.
