Cyprus Update: Cyprus community leaders hold crucial meeting but decline to comment until September 14

Cyprus: Updates and statements on the ongoing Cyprus negotiations will now have to wait until September 14 when leaders from both communities would have completed a series of meetings aimed at bridging gaps on certain chapters and also for the first time to discuss issues such as guarantees.

Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot Leader Mustafa Akinci met again on Monday for about four hours in one of the six meetings scheduled between now and September 14 as both leaders agreed that no statement would be made regarding the the negotiations.

Another five meetings are scheduled until September 14 as both leaders are set to meet again on Wednesday August 31, Friday September 2, Tuesday September 6, Thursday September 8 and Wednesday September 14.

Speaking after the meeting on Monday, president Anastasiades said;
“We have agreed that no statements will be made during these important meetings,” adding that an announcement would be made on September 14.
Anastasiades urged the media to respect the decision and said that the intention was not to impose a black out but rather to facilitate the negotiations “during these important meetings and render them more effective”.

Meanwhile the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci is preparing rigorously for major developments in New York towards September ending with the hope of a five-party conference with the guarantor powers.
