Serena Williams beats Angelique Kerber to match Graf's record of 22 grand slam
Tennis: Serena Williams have won a record equaling 22nd grand slam title after she defeated Germany's Angelique Kerber at the Wimbledon women's
final on Saturday in England.
The world number one won 7-5 6-4 in a tough game that was decided by
a few key points and is now tied with Steffi Graf at the top of the open era women's champions
list and just two titles short of Margaret Court's all-time record of 24
titles.
Williams said;
"It's been very hard not to think about it," she said when asked about her successful chase of Graf's record.
"I had a couple of tries this year," she added, "It makes the victory even sweeter to know how hard I worked for it."
Willams thanked the crowd excessively and expressed her delight
at winning the record on a court which "feels like home"
"I love playing Angelique, she's such a great opponent," Serena said of her opponent Kerberr.
"and she's a wonderful person to be around off the court as well. Thank you for being that great person!"
Kerber in a tribute to Serena Williams after the match, said;
"It's always an honour to play against you,"
