Iranian actress Taraneh Alidoosti has found herself in the centre of controversy with feminist tattoo
Feminism is seen negatively in the Islamic republic.
Taraneh Alidoosti’s tattoo was captured by cameras at a news conference on Monday as she address reporters after returning from the Cannes Film Festival, where her latest film “The Salesman” won two awards.
The photo quickly sparked a debate on Twitter, where several people said the image was fake and many criticized the actress of being feminist and supporting the right to abortion, currently illegal in Iran.
The actress explained the meaning of the symbol, which she calls "The Feminist Fist," in a Twitter post. She said it was an "adaptation of the Venus symbol combined with the raised fist which is more commonly associated with the symbol for Black Power in the sixties."
In another twitter post, she told her fans that she had previously explained that she viewed feminism as being about “showing unity and fairness”.
“Keep calm and YES I’m a feminist,” she said in a series of tweets on Tuesday night. “Feminist: a person who believes in the social, political, and economical equality of the sexes.”
One follower @RaminRamroodi replied “Keep calm and You will be in Evin Prison Tomorrow” — referencing the notorious Tehran jail — to which Alidoosti replied with several smiley faces.
Alidoosti is married and has a young daughter.
