EgyptAir Flight 804 wreckage spotted in Mediterranean
Egypt: According to reports, Egypt says it has spotted the
wreckage of the EgyptAir Flight 804 plane that crashed into the Mediterranean last
month, killing all 66 passengers on board.
The discovery came just days
before the 30-day lifespan expires on the batteries for the emergency
signals from the Airbus A320’s recorders in the May 19 crash. In a statement by the committee on Wednesday, it said that a vessel hired by the Egyptian government to join the search operation for the data recorders and the wreckage of the crashed A320 "had identified a number of actual locations of the wreckage, accordingly the first images of the wreckage were provided to the investigation committee."
It added that, the search team and investigators on board the vessel will draw a map for the wreckage distribution spots based on the wreckage location.
The plane which was heading to Cairo en route from Paris disappeared from radar hours after take off.
A major part of the investigation is whether the plane broke up before entering the water or as it struck the surface. Besides the recorders, the wreckage itself could offer clues about what happened.
Finding the cause of the crash is important because the A320 is a workhorse of the fleet, with 6,700 flying worldwide.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
