Donald Trump Jr. hints father may withdraw from Ukraine war, slams Zelensky and EU sanctions
Donald Trump may withdraw from the war in Ukraine, according to statements made by the eldest son of the US President at a Middle East conference.
Donald Trump Jr., though holding no official role in his father’s administration, remains a central figure in the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement, and his comments reflect the opposition of some members of the Trump team toward the Ukrainian government.
Trump Jr. attacked Ukraine’s policy, stating that the “corrupt” wealthy Ukrainians abandoned the country and left the “rural class” to fight. Concurrently, he accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of continuing the war to avoid defeat in the next election, arguing that his sustained recognition by the left makes him almost a “deity,” while his country is “much more corrupt than Russia.”
Furthermore, according to The Guardian, he criticised the EU’s Chief of Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, for the sanctions against Russia, which, in his view, increased the price of oil and allowed Russia to finance the war. “The European strategy is that we wait for Russia to go broke – that’s not a plan,” he declared.
Referring to the 2022 election campaign, Trump Jr. claimed that only three people viewed the war in Ukraine as a main issue. He insisted that the influx of drugs from Venezuela constitutes a “more immediate and dangerous problem” for the US than the war in Ukraine or Russia.
He also claimed that he observed this summer in Monaco that 50% of the ultra-luxury cars, such as Bugattis and Ferraris, had licence plates from Ukraine. “Do you think these cars were earned in Ukraine?” he wondered.
When asked if it was likely that his father—who ran for office claiming he could bring peace to Ukraine—would simply withdraw, Trump Jr. said that he might do so, adding that his father is one of the most unpredictable people in politics. He emphasised that the US would no longer be “the idiot with the checkbook,” referring to financial aid to Ukraine.
