Two suspects arrested with cocaine in north Cyprus

Lefkoşa, 6 August 2025 — Two individuals, have been remanded in custody for two days following their arrest during a narcotics operation conducted by the Special Operations Unit (CÖŞ) of the Lefkoşa Police Directorate.

The suspects identified as İU and SG were found in possession of a substance believed to be cocaine.

The police testified that the operation was launched on 5 August 2025 after officers received a tip-off about suspected drug activity. During the intervention on Vedat Kaner Street in Lefkoşa, police reportedly found approximately 2 grams of a white powdery substance—believed to be cocaine—wrapped in a transparent plastic bag in the possession of the suspects.

In addition to the suspected narcotics, police also recovered a white porcelain plate bearing burn marks, which is considered a potential piece of evidence related to drug use. Both suspects were taken into custody at the scene.

According to the officer, suspect İU claimed in his statement that he found the substance on the ground in a parking area where he had left his vehicle. Police noted that this statement would be verified through nearby surveillance footage.

Authorities also indicated that the substance would be sent for laboratory analysis to confirm its nature, and the packaging would undergo fingerprint examination as part of the investigation.

Emphasizing that the investigation is still in its early stages and that further witness statements and evidence reviews are required, the police requested that both suspects remain in custody for 48 hours.

The judge approved the request, ordering that both suspects be held for two more days while the investigation continues.
